Year 4 Science...What is photosynthesis ?

Green plants absorb light energy using chlorophyll in their leaves. They use it to react carbon dioxide with water to make a sugar called glucose. The glucose is used in respiration, or converted into starch and stored. Oxygen is produced as a by-product.
This process is called photosynthesis. Temperature, carbon dioxide concentration and light intensity are factors that can limit the rate of photosynthesis.
Plants also need mineral ions, including nitrate and magnesium, for healthy growth. They suffer from poor growth in conditions where mineral ions are deficient.

Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the chemical change which happens in the leaves of green plants. It is the first step towards making food - not just for plants but ultimately every animal on the planet.
During this reaction, carbon dioxide and water are converted into glucose andoxygen. The reaction requires light energy, which is absorbed by a green substance called chlorophyll.
Photosynthesis takes place in leaf cells. These contain chloroplasts, which are tiny objects containing chlorophyll.
the cell includes: a waxt outer cuticle, the upper epidermis, palisade mesophyll, spongy mesophyll, lower epidermis, stoma, and guard cells with chloroplasts Cross-section through a leaf cell
Here is the equation for photosynthesis:
carbon dioxide + water (+ light energy) ------->    glucose + oxygen
'Light energy' is shown in brackets because it is not a substance. You will also see the equation written like this:
Plants absorb water through their roots, and carbon dioxide through their leaves. Some glucose is used for respiration, while some is converted into insolublestarch for storage. The stored starch can later be turned back into glucose and used in respiration. Oxygen is released as a by-product of photosynthesis.

Animals that camouflage...in Year 4 Science

Can you see them among the leaves ?

They are leaf insects that camouflage...

These are grasshoppers.  They camouflage too.

The seahorse looks like a seaweed. It is a way of camouflaging itself as it lives among the seaweeds.
The common pygmy seahorse, have a shape, size and colour that allows them to blend in perfectly with their coral habitat.
The thorny seahorse, changes its colour to blend in with its surroundings.

The chameleon camouflages itself to its surroundings.

The tree frog camouflages itself to its surroundings.
The moth camouflages itself to the colour of the dry leaves and tree bark.

Can you see the owls on the tree ?
They camouflage themselves to look like part of the tree.
The hare and the polar bear too camouflage themselves to the colour of their surroundings. The fur of the snowshoe hare turns white during winter and turns rusty brown during summer.

Interesting Facts about Science for teaching " Survival of Species " in Year 5 Science...

Hey ! They are pregnant seahorses ! Do you know that they are not female seahorses but..
they are actually the male seahorses that carry the eggs for about 9 to 45 days before the tiny seahorses emerge fully developed ! The male seahorse is actually equipped with a brood pouch on the ventral, or front-facing, side of the tail. When mating, the female seahorse deposits up to 1 500 eggs in the male's pouch.

Do you know that scorpion carries its young on its back ? The live female scorpions give birth to live young 2 to 18 months after mating, depending on the species. The newborns will immediately climb onto their mother's back, where they will remain for several days until their first molt (shedding of skin ). Some young will remain there much longer, depending on the species too. The mother will not feed them but she does carry them around and protect them until they are able to hunt and defend themselves.
However, suprisingly if the mother gets hungry, she will no longer recognize the young ones as her young but may eat them. That is why after the first molt, the young scorpions will leave to establish territories of their own and will be sexually mature after the sixth molt.
